West Scranton
High School displayed its patriotism and gratitude to our nation's veterans
on Friday, Nov. 9, 2001. A special ceremony
was held to honor our local veterans. This co-curricular effort initiated
by many dedicated teachers was a great success. Students from all aspects
of West Scranton High School participated in this awesome
event. They were motivated from all realms of West Scranton High School
to truly strive toward a goal.
In attendance at the dedication were veterans,
students, teachers, and administrators who all exulted in a job well
done. In all, there were approximately 50 veterans and 200 people at
the memorial. The program included the dedication of the mural created
by Mrs. Duffy's art major students and the singing of patriotic songs by
Mrs. Lotz's chorus students. Historical backgrounds were read by Mrs. Damiano's,
Mr. Bresser's, and Mr. J. O'Hearn's history students. Original poetry was read by Mr. Mazzino's
and Mrs. DeFrancesco's English students. Mrs. Coyne's foods students
provided refreshments for the event. The students and faculty members
who participated in the ceremony should be commended for the tremendous
amount of effort they put into this memorial. The event exemplified
the real West Scranton High School, its students, and its ideals.
As this wondrous event culminated, a grateful
veteran stood up and asked if he could say a few words. He made the following remarks. "When
people say that patriotism is dead, tell them to come to West Scranton
High School. When people say that kids today don't know or care about
the sacrifice our nation's veterans made, tell them to come to West
Scranton High School." This brief statement of gratitude summed
up what West Scranton High School is truly about.
